The Sport King should be new enough to shoot just about anything through. It didn't come out until the early 50's. I've got a first model(lever barrellock) Sport King, have had it for MANY years, and have shot a pile ofstandard and high velocity through it with no harm. I've stayed away fromthe hyper-velocity stuff. The older A. B, D, etc, are a different story. Standard velocity only for them. Not sure on the HD-Military-I ran a pile of high velocity through one foryears with no apparent damage-but I use mostly standard velocity inmy current one. Sorry, but the advice given so far is not exactly correct.Any Hi Std Military grip or Slant grip pistol needs to shoot Std Vel ammo (like CCI Standard Velocity ammo). The reason is that the gun's recoil spring was designed for that level of recoil.

More than that and the slide slams into the stop on the frame. Theses guns are susceptible to frame cracks from the magazine well across the top surface of the frame to the cut on the side of the frame for the slide lock open lever. It is a fatigue stress failure. That means each firing of excessive recoil accumulates over time until one day the frame cracks (NOT GOOD!).

These guns must be maintained and kept away from High or Hyper Velocity ammo. The recoil spring lives in a cavity in the slide and rubs on the walls of that cavity with each recoil of the slide. That thins the spring over time with the result that it looses its force. When the spring is weak it allows the slide to slam into the frame. A 10% reduction in its force is unacceptable. The spring must be replaced regularly or you risk the frame cracking.

The worst combo for a potential frame crack is the use of High or Hyper Velocity ammo and a weakened recoil spring. But just shooting High or Hyper Velocity ammo MAY induce the frame crack (??). It makes no sense to risk it.While some may get away without following this advice, the fatigue stress continues to accumulate over time and the end result MAY be a frame crack. There is a very good forum which contains a section just for High Standards. There are several real experts there and one that repairs and tunes Hi Std pistols.

He has seen it all and has fixed many guns for forum visitors. The forum is Rimfire Central. The gunsmith is jaybar.

There is also a historian there that has the majority of the factory records and some of the machine drawings for the guns. There is the current High Standard Company in Houston Texas. The Connecticut company went out of business in the mid 1980's and this new company started up in the early 1990's after buying the name, the drawings, and some of the tooling. There initial offerings were problematical but their guns from the last couple of years are quite good. The new versions have stainless steel frames (left in the raw, mostly) and resist this frame cracking business.

As such they can shoot at least High Veloctiy ammo but it is still better to shoot Standard Veloctiy ammo in even them. The most popular SV ammo for competition seems to be CCI SV. It is accurate, reliable, and mid-priced. I have about a dozen target 22 pistols and all operate and shoot accurately with this ammo. That can not be said of any other SV ammo I have used. The new Hi Std magazines from the TX Hi Std company come tuned for CCI SV ammo. The early guns through the HD military do not suffer this frame cracking problem, or so I am told.

It is only the Military and Slant grip models, right up to the very last one produced in Connecticut.I hope this claifies the issues of the Hi Std pistols.LDBennett. There are two ways to solve you requirements I can see if it is a Hi Std pistol you want (if you are smart you WANT a Hi Std pistol!).First use CCI SV ammo. It works out to $4 per 50 but it is sold in 100 count at about $8. It is accurate, reliable and relatively cheap. It is a mid priced ammo. I buy mine by the case via the Internet. A google search will reveal the best price including shipping.

Your dealer that does stock CCI products might agree to get you a case of it with his next order if you just ask.The second option is to buy one of the new Houston Texas High Standards but it must be the current model with the raw stainless steel frame. It can readily shoot High Velocity ammo because of better materials choices for the frame. But even that gun comes with magazines tuned for CCI SV ammo.If all of this is too much then just buy a Ruger MK series all steel gun and shoot all the cheapo HV bulk ammo you want.It is not wise to try to make the Hi Std guns shoot High Velocity ammo with spring changes as you just move the battering of the gun around the gun. Other problem can develop from the extra speed imparted to the slide by the heavier recoil spring in the slide's return from recoil.LDBennett.The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts.
