A few years ago, I wanted to take my fitness to the next level. Sure, I was pretty fit and thin. I could dominate on the elliptical and run a few miles. But, something was missing. My body wasn’t where I wanted it.
I had a bit of a gut and lacked strength. I wanted to be at an elite level.I had read about Beachbody’s Insanity, and was intrigued. I needed to answer the question: does Insanity work?
This review explains why.On my first day I did the fit test. Since I was already in good shape, I had decent results. So, I figured I’d just jump right it and master the actual program.During the first workout, my “good shape” was quickly shown to be a complete fraud!
And mastering the workout? Give me a break!
I finished, but was exhausted.The next day my entire body was sore. I mean “bend down to grab a pencil and wince in pain” sore. I’d been a fitness buff for over fifteen years, but had never been that sore in my entire life after doing Beachbody’s Insanity.By the end of the sixty days my body was transformed. I was leaner and fitter and my muscle tone increased greatly, especially in the core and abs. I’d also lost those pesky seven pounds that I’d held onto for a few years.I started doing challenges like the Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash, training with only running and Insanity.
I aced those mud runs!Whenever anyone asks me Does Insanity Work? I’m always ready to tell them “absolutely!”The Insanity package comes with ten DVDs with ten actual workouts (see individual reviews below). The exercises can best be described as intense cardio in the form of interval training (a few minutes of intense activity with a brief break).The Insanity workouts focus on the core, but strengthen almost every muscle group. You also get a nutrition guide, a short fitness plan to get started, and a workout calendar.Also, you can now get Insanity with, a streaming service which also gives you access to all their other workouts. I’d recommend this option if you have a good internet connection and see yourself using other programs in the future. Plyometric Cardio CircuitThis is a great forty minute interval workout with a warmup, stretching, and two rounds of intense jumping style exercises.
With workouts like power squats and ski abs, Plyometric Cardio Circuit is a challenge. Get ready to jump higher and strengthen your legs.
Oh, and be sore. Cardio Power and ResistanceWith an upper body and core focus, this forty minute workout will leave you sweating like crazy. When you hit the floor for moving push-ups and globe jumps, you’ll realize that Insanity lives up to its name. Cardio RecoveryThis is an “off day” workout that is focused on stretching and isometric exercises. It’s not a cakewalk, but is “easy” compared to the rest of the Insanity DVDs. You can thank Shaun T for this much deserved “break.” Pure CardioInstead of intervals, this program (after warmup) jumps right into fifteen minutes of straight workouts.
It’s the same exercises (like push-ups, switch kicks, etc.) but without any breaks. You will be up and down and sweating (and maybe yelling). Cardio AbsI like Cardio Abs because it’s an intense abdominal workout without a single sit-up! Still, it’s fifteen minutes of crazy ab work, both standing up and sitting down.
Your abs will be shaking by the time it’s all over. Core Cardio and BalanceThis is done after you’ve reached the thirty day mark. You’re given a “recovery week” to prepare for an even bigger challenge. It’s a mix of cardio and isometric work. While it’s not the easiest, it’s a welcome relief compared to what is coming.
Max Interval CircuitThis is the start of the long, intense second round Insanity workouts. And, they’re tough. Instead of two sets of interval exercises, now there are three. And, the length of each set has increased from two to three minutes. It’s similar in style to the previous workouts, but in Max Interval Circuit, the exercises are more varied and tougher. Max Interval PlyoLike the first plyo, it’s a tough mix of cardio plyometric exercises that will leave your legs burning.
How Many Push Ups
This time it approaches sixty minutes of hell (fun?). Make it through this and you’ll be really sore (with a better body). Max ConditioningLike Pure Cardio, Max Conditioning is an intense cardio workout with fewer rest breaks. By fewer, I mean you get none! If you can make it through this without stopping and pausing the DVD, then you’ve come a long way. By now your body should look better and your core should be strong enough to attempt the exercises.
Max RecoveryThis is similar to recovery, except it’s longer and more complete. After the intensity that precedes it, Max recovery days will seem like a piece of cake.In summary, if you want to take your workout to a new level, try Insanity. Keep in mind, you can always mix and match while you do it. I continued running and hiking. I also did some bicep work and other lifting since since the program is weak on some muscle groups.While you should always consult with a doctor, Shaun T advises starting out by doing the most that you can.
In other words, if you’re out of shape, you can start with just a couple of each move as you improve your endurance. Just do it.What are you waiting for?

The Insanity Workout series, by the makers of P90X, tests every cardio limit you have with 10 high intensity and self-described insane workouts. There's no equipment needed and there are a wide variety of cardio moves, from burpees and football runs to jumping jacks and suicides. The schedule maps out 60 days of increasingly and the work-to-rest ratio (3 minutes on, 30 seconds rest) keeps you in the anaerobic zone for most of the workouts, making this a series that will appeal to experienced exercisers who want to push their limits.
The name of this workout series, Insanity, says it all. This 60-day cardio-based program includes 10 workout DVDs with one goal in mind: To kick your butt with high intensity aerobic and anaerobic interval training. To that end, many of the workouts follow the same basic formula: for 3 minutes, followed by 30 seconds of rest, which isn't nearly enough time to recover. This very short recovery time combined with such high-intensity exercise makes for very challenging workouts that quickly sneak up on you.

If you don't like high impact exercise or gasping for air, you won't be a fan of these workouts. The exercises are straightforward and athletic, requiring no equipment and you'll recognize many of them, such as jumping jacks, burpees, and suicides. There are unique moves as well - Side burpees, combination pushups with jumping jacks, frog jumps and more. It's hard to believe someone could come up with that many high intensity, killer exercises with no equipment needed, but they managed to do it. The DVDs include. Plyometric Cardio Circuit - This 40-minute workout may seem short, but it's long enough to kick butt with explosive moves like power squats, ski jumps, pushups and mountain climbers.
There's a tough 10-minute warm-up, a 5-minute stretch and then about 20 minutes of the intervals - 3 minutes at high intensity followed by 30 seconds of rest. Cardio Power and Resistance - This 40-minute workout feels similar to the plyo cardio circuit and it is—it has the same format, but with different exercises and a focus on muscular endurance. Some moves include power jump squats, squat kicks, shoulder pushups, dips, hurdle jumps, and moving pushups. Cardio Recovery and Max Recovery - There's no cardio here, but there's plenty of challenge and variety with a mix of planks, squats, lunges, pushups, and stretches.
Pure Cardio - This workout is 40 minutes of hell.er.cardio with no rests. You do move after a move such as suicide drills, switch kicks, power jacks and frog jumps without breaks. Even the video exercisers look ready to drop. Expensive - At about $120, this is definitely a long-term investment. High Impact - Most of the exercises are high impact and intense and, while Shaun T stresses safety and good form, there is a risk of soreness and injury. Repetitive - The workouts have different exercises, but most of them follow the same general format.
Doing the same type of workouts day after day can get tedious. No Strength Training - This is, by definition, a cardio-based program but a complete program should include strength training, something you'll have to do on your own. That isn't easy with such high-intensity cardio to recover from.
