Today, architecture design is frequently based upon modern concerns such as the environment andmust consider the form, texture, structure, space, mass, materials, and cost before designing a building or space. As such an architect must have a goodgrasp of mathematics, engineering and science. To open opportunities for the careers in architecture, the Centre of Studies for Architecture, Faculty ofArchitecture, Planning and Surveying offers programmes that will fulfill the high demand of professional graduates and provide the nation with human capitalin its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONS) ARCHITECTUREThe Bachelor of Science (Hons) Architecture is a 4-year full-time programme with a minimum entry requirement of SPM. This is the first of a two-tierarchitectural education programme offered with a total of 136 credits, and the curriculum is oriented to produce graduates with skills in design andarchitectural technology at semi-professional level. This programme focuses on student essential skills in design as well as the ability to respond toenvironmental issues and changes in the future.

Emphasis is given to create awareness among students on the importance to strike a balance between the needto build and the responsibility to minimize impacts of the development on the existing natural and social environments. Students are also encouraged tocreate innovative solutions to design problems within the cultural and regional context in their studio projects.

Green

This aspiration is reflected in thecurriculum design whereby a considerable balance is given on the aspects of science, technology and culture in design. This will expand the students’ senseof responsibility towards making architecture that cares for the current and future generations. Graduates of the programme have the opportunity to serve thepublic and private sectors. Graduates may work as an architect’s technical assistant or designer in the private sector, or a development officer in thepublic sector. Alternatively, graduates can pursue their studies and enrol in the Master of Architecture offered by the Faculty, local or universitiesabroad.This programme is accredited by the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) with exemptions from LAM Part 1 examination and the Public Service Department Malaysia(JPA). It is also validated by The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) with exemption from RIBA Part 1.This programme is offered in Shah Alam and Perak campuses.MASTER OF ARCHITECTUREThe Master of Architecture is a 2-year full-time taught programme with a total of 62 credits. It is design to produce graduates with critical thinkingskills and competency in various specialized areas in architecture.

Building Management Courses

The acquisition and advancement of knowledge in this programme is through studio-basedlearning, based on critique sessions, reviews, seminars and one-to-one tutorial, combined with classroom-based courses. This is further enhanced by theinvolvement of practitioners and industry professionals in various studio programmes. This provides an avenue for the programme to be continuously updatedwith current development and technology in the industry. The comprehensive studio projects are designed to become the platform which integrates knowledge inthe core courses, and also brings architectural and engineering disciplines together. The programme is supported with digital computer laboratories toenhance student output.

The programme places design, research and scholarship in the forefront of its curriculum to prepare students for careers asprofessionals in the building industry as well as opportunity in academia invariably, through advancement to doctoral degrees. CENTRE OF STUDIES FOR BUILDING SURVEYINGOVERVIEWBuilding Surveying/Facility Management is a rapidly growing profession in both public and private sectors in Malaysia and their services are highly sought inareas of development and maintenance. The profession that encompasses multiple disciplines ensure functionality of the built environment by integratingpeople, place, process and technology.

Their scope ranges from the design of large structures to, provide advises on building condition/ defects,alterations, extensions, maintenance and repairs of existing building. Building surveyors often work on preventative measures to keep buildings in goodcondition and sustainable.

They are trained in the techniques and law of building construction and working with buildings of architectural or historicimportance. The main roles and responsibility covers the areas of Building Control, Maintenance and Conservation of Building and Building Performance andAudit. They are required not only at tactical and operational level, but also at the strategy level.

To address the government initiatives towards highquality buildings, the Centre of Studies for Building Surveying, Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying has embarked its programmes to cater theneeds of building surveyors in Malaysia at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.DIPLOMA IN BUILDING SURVEYINGDiploma in Building Surveying is a 3-year full-time programme, with a minimum entry requirement of SPM having a total of 90 credits. This programme isdesigned to facilitate upgrading and mobility of professionals and para-professionals working in the built environment disciplines, to be more informed andeffective contribution in their employment through the development of appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding. The areas of concern include materialproperties, building surveying, building services, environmental technology, building law contract and construction management, building maintenance,building design and integrated project. The programme is designed to include an industrial training session of one semester, as an attempt to expose studentsto actual working environment which will further develop their technical and personal skills.

Students are attached to public and private sector,consultants, building and maintenance firms and other related firms.Outcome based education (OBE) is a key teaching element of the courses. The approach to teaching utilises the relevant skills and values currently acquiredthrough construction industry experience. Students will learn by working through a series of learning problems focusing on contemporary and relevant practicerelated issues. Graduates from this programme are qualified to work as building surveyor, building inspector, certifier or technical assistants in bothpublic and private sectors. Based on their entrepreneurial, technical and soft skill acquired they can set up their own business.
